Frequently asked questions
How many children attend the school?
Approximately 240 children attend the school in Saint Kizito each year.
Why do so many children have severe disabilities?
There are many reasons, such as accidents, lack of medical care, infectious diseases, or genetic defects. However, the main cause is extreme poverty. The resulting malnutrition during pregnancy and after birth is the primary cause of severe physical disabilities. In Burundi, approximately 60 % of children under the age of 5 suffer from chronic malnutrition.
What benefits do the children receive here?
In Burundi, children with disabilities were never taken into consideration. The Saint Kizito Institute is different. It is fully accessible. The children live at the institute, and care is taken to ensure they receive a balanced diet. They have access to education, surgeries, physical therapy, and orthopedic aids.In Burundi wurde nie an Kinder mit einem Handicap gedacht.
What advantages do children at the ISK have compared to other/public schools in Burundi?
In Burundi, most schools are not accessible to children with disabilities: the restrooms are too narrow, the buildings are not wheelchair-accessible, and many children have to make long, dangerous commutes on their own, which is both hazardous and unreasonable.
At the Institut Saint Kizito, things are different: The children can live at the center, they receive balanced meals with essential nutrients, and they have access to education, surgical procedures, assistive devices, therapies, and barrier-free spaces.
In this way, the children receive not only a school education but also medical care, safety, and a real chance at.
What do the children do after elementary school?
The school administration and the academic director work to find the right path forward for the children in the graduating classes. This could be, for example, a middle school, a high school, or an apprenticeship in the workforce. Depending on the age at which the children enter first grade, they may already be adults by the time they leave our school.
How often do we visit?
Our co-presidents, Ursula and Ciara, take turns visiting or sometimes go to Burundi together. Both visit 1 – 2 times a year. This close connection to the school and the local staff is invaluable and essential for effective collaboration.
How much of my donation goes to Burundi?
This is what sets us apart from other organizations. Donations should go where they’re needed most: to the children!
We’re proud that this is what makes us stand out:
About 90 – 95 % of all donations go directly toward the education and health of children in Burundi.
We do our work on a volunteer basis.
How can I join the association?
With a donation of just CHF 20 per year, you become a member right away and will receive our newsletter three times a year.
Where is Burundi?
Burundi is a small landlocked country in the heart of Africa. That is why Burundi is also called “the Heart of Africa.” It borders Rwanda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. To the west lies the deep-blue Lake Tanganyika, one of the largest lakes in the world and the deepest lake in Africa. The capital is Gitega, while Bujumbura serves as Burundi’s economic hub.
