«Without Saint Kizito, I wouldn't be where I am today.
The entire potential of all the next steps in my life after Saint Kizito was shaped by the training and support I received at Saint Kizito.»
Fulgence Ndagijimana
Former student and president of the association «Anciens de Saint Kizito»
In the midst of the vibrant city of Bujumbura lies a very special place: the Saint Kizito Institute – a school and boarding school that is far more than just a place of learning. New perspectives are emerging here for children and young people who would otherwise have little chance.
240 children attend the classes every year. Approximately 180 of them have physical disabilities.
The Saint Kizito Institute is committed to the holistic development of young people. It offers high-level schooling and is particularly geared towards children with physical impairments.
However, what truly sets the institute apart is its heart: the conviction that every child is valuable and deserves a future – regardless of their background or financial means.
The classes teach the classic school subjects such as mathematics, languages, natural sciences, and history. However, the students also learn what it means to take responsibility, to show solidarity, and to actively shape the world.
Many children participate in choirs or sports clubs and discover talents that extend far beyond the classroom.
In many countries, food is taken for granted. In Burundi ist es eine tägliche Herausforderung. About half of all children suffer from chronic malnutrition – with severe consequences.
Malnutrition is not just about "not eating enough." It means: A child does not get what their body and brain need to grow. Most often, the vicious cycle begins during pregnancy when the mother is undernourished. Therefore, the children often come into the world with physical limitations. Even after birth, many children lack the necessary and vital nutrients.
Other reasons for physical impairments include injuries from accidents, the effects of illnesses, and genetic disorders.
Visitors to Saint Kizito quickly realize that these children and their joy of life also change us. Despite their limitations, the children are curious, lively, and full of joy. They can learn, play, and belong!
Every day at the Saint Kizito Institute, these children build something that many thought was impossible: a future with perspective, dignity, and genuine participation.
